Digital Approaches to Social Science Research
As we face the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new normal, PSSC offers three online courses (3) that aim to help social science faculty, researchers, and students continue with their research work despite limitations due to quarantine restrictions and precautionary measures. The learning objectives of these courses are:
- To develop the participants’ capacity to design and plan a social scientific study using digital research methods
- To equip participants with practical skills in conducting ethnography, interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys online
ONLINE COURSE
Doing Ethnography Online
November 23 to December 14, 2020
Duration: 4 weeks (approx. 4 hours/week)
Training Fee: PhP5,000.00/participant

Synchronous sessions will be held every Monday (Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, and Dec. 14) at 5:30-7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Asynchronous assignments will be hosted on the PSSC e-Learning Academy (Moodle).

Dr. Clement C. Camposano is the newly-appointed Chancellor of the University of the Philippines-Visayas. He is a faculty member in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction–Educational Foundations of the UP College of Education, teaching anthropology and sociology of education courses. Prior to joining UP Diliman, he was a senior faculty member at the University of Asia and the Pacific where he taught courses in Philippine history and culture, social science research, political theory and political dynamics. He is also currently president of the Philippine Studies Association and served in the board of Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao. His current research interest lies in the anthropology of contemporary migration, particularly on the transnationalization of the contemporary Filipino household and on the role of social media and basketball in shaping and sustaining narratives of the self among Filipino migrants. Dr. Camposano obtained his PhD in Philippine Studies from UP Diliman.

Dr. Julienne Thesa Y. Baldo-Cubelo is an Associate Professor of the Department of Communication Research of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines Diliman. She teaches qualitative research methods and analysis in the undergraduate and the graduate studies programs. She has an M.A. degree in Women and Development Studies and a doctorate in Communication. Her research interests are gender, family communication, communication-as-culture, and representation in advertisements. She is a gender-sensitivity trainer, a communication consultant in various government and government organizations, and breastfeeding-natural-birth counselor.

Mr. Martin Augustine B. Borlongan is an Assistant Professor of the School of Statistics, University of the Philippines Diliman. He obtained his Master of Science in Statistics degree from the same institution. His research interests are in the fields of non-parametric statistics, robust statistics, categorical data analysis and computational statistics. His involvement in survey projects in the fields of agriculture, health, governance, social and civic participation, financial literacy and market research has exposed him to programming computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI) and online surveys using free and subscription-based software. He handled reviews of CAPI programs as a data quality management specialist and developed CAPI programs as lead CAPI programmer.

Can I join more than one course?
Yes, you may choose to join any one, two, or even all three courses.
Will the courses be synchronous or asynchronous?
The courses will be conducted in a blended format. Weekly synchronous courses will be held in Zoom while asynchronous assignments will be hosted on the PSSC e-Learning Academy (Moodle).
How long will the courses last?
Each course will last four (4) weeks, each week with 4-hour worth of synchronous and asynchronous activities.
How much do I have to pay for each course?
The fee is PhP5,000.00 per participant per course. PSSC accepts payment through bank deposit or transfer, and online (PayPal).
Is there a deadline for enrollment?
The deadline for enrollment (and full payment) is 18 November 2020.
Will I receive a certificate upon completion of the course?
For each course completed, each participant will receive a certificate of completion.
