To officially launch the partnership between the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) and the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), a series of webinars entitled “Narratives of COVID-19 from the Social Science Communities in India and the Philippines” was organized from October 2020 to January 2021.
The first webinar, held last October 15, 2020, was on Examining the COVID-19 Responses of India and the Philippines. The panel included Dr. Michael Lim Tan, Professor Emeritus (Anthropology) and former Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman, and Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi, Director General of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries, as speakers; Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan, Vice Chairperson of the University Grants Commission and Chairperson of ICSSR, and Dr. Gregorio E.H. del Pilar, President of the National Research Council of the Philippines and Chairperson of its Social Sciences Division, as reactors; and Dr. Mario J. Aguja, then President of the Philippine Sociological Society and PSSC Board Member, as moderator.

The second installment of this webinar series—Examining Social Protection Among Vulnerable Groups during COVID-19—was conducted on November 18, 2020. The session was moderated by Dr. Madhushree Sekher, Professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Dr. Judy Taguiwalo, Professorial Lecturer at the College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD) of the University of the Philippines Diliman and former Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Philippines, and Dr. Rosalinda Ofreneo, Professor Emeritus also at UP CSWCD, as speaker and reactor, respectively, talked about the state of social protection in the Philippines. From the Indian side, Dr. Ramesh Chand, Member of the National Institution for Transforming India Aayog, Government of India, began the discussion—with Dr. Arvind Virmani, Chairperson for the Foundation for Economic Growth and Welfare, serving as reactor.

Held last January 28, 2021, the third and last webinar in this series focused on Understanding Economic Stimulus Packages during COVID-19. Hon. Stella Luz A. Quimbo, Ph.D., Marikina City Second District Representative, and Dr. Nagesh Kumar, Director and Head of the South and South-West Asia Office of the United Nations ESCAP, led the discussion on the Philippine and Indian economies, respectively. Reactors Mr. Adolfo Jose A. Montesa, Project Officer at the Action for Economic Reforms, and Dr. D.K. Nauriyal, Professor of Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, followed with their reactions to and insights on the topic. The session was moderated by Philippine Sociological Society President Dr. Louie Benedict R. Ignacio.
