National Social Science Congress
From the first National Social Science Congress (NSSC) in 1983, the NSSC has become the signature program of PSSC. Originally scheduled every five years, Congress serves as the platform for social scientists to share their latest research, test concepts, theories, and ideas, and critically examine issues of social significance. The NSSC also enables other sectors of society, including policymakers, legislators, local officials, donor agencies, and civil society organizations, to develop partnerships with the social sciences in their common pursuit of human development, equality and wellbeing. Likewise, the NSSC also gives voice to scholars, researchers, and teachers who wish to be involved in understanding society and contributing to its betterment. In 2015, the PSSC Board of Trustees agreed to shorten the gap between NSSCs – it is now held every three years and is conducted in the regions to provide more access to scholars living outside Metro Manila.
The NSSC focused on the following themes:
- Towards Excellence in Social Science in the Philippines (17-19 November 1983)
- Social Science and Economic Recovery (24-26 November 1988)
- Empowerment and Accountability for Sustainable Development: Towards Theory-Building in the Social Sciences (9-10 December 1993)
- The Philippine Social Sciences in the Life of the Nation (8-9 July 1998)
- What’s with the Filipino Youth: Perspectives from the Social Sciences (15-17 May 2003)
- The Paradox of Philippine Education and Education Reforms (7-9 May 2008)
- Generations (29-31 May 2013)
- Inclusive: Gateways to Sustainable Futures (15-17 June 2016)
