PSSC is also historically linked with UNESCO at the national and international levels. The UNESCO National Commission (UNACOM) of the Philippines conceived the idea of a social science council in the Philippines and through a series of meetings with Filipino social scientists in the 60s, set in motion the formation of PSSC. UNACOM has since become a consistent partner and supporter of PSSC, teaming up on key research projects and conferences over the last five decades. The Bangkok-based UNESCO Regional Unit for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific (RUSHAP) was also instrumental in PSSC’s membership at AASSREC. During PSSC’s stint as AASSREC Secretariat, PSSC regularly tapped the support of UNESCO RUSHAP for AASSREC activities. In 1994, PSSC was designated as the national liaison of the UNESCO Management of Social Transformation (MOST) Programme in the Philippines. PSSC has been representing the country’s social sciences sector in UNESCO MOST’s intergovernmental meetings in Paris. One of the outcomes of PSSC’s collaboration with UNESCO MOST was the formation of the Philippine Migration Research Network (PMRN). PSSC continues to nurture PMRN and tap the support of UNESCO MOST for the research projects and conferences of PMRN.
More recently, PSSC has established separate Academic, Research Training and Extension Program Collaborations with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Hallym University in South Korea. These agreements aim to develop a better understanding of Social Sciences and Humanities in the Philippines, India and South Korea through collaborative research, networks of social scientists, and free and open exchange of relevant information. The collaboration between PSSC and ICSSR, and PSSC and Hallym University also aim at enabling sustained and continuing partnerships in the social sciences, including more exchanges of researchers, methodologies, training resources, publications and results, promoting high standards of research and excellence in social sciences. Among the priorities under the two collaborations are addressing current problems in society and promoting multidisciplinary and structurally-oriented social science research instruction in areas of medium- and long-term interests. Additionally, recognizing the important role of the social sciences in matters generally reserved for the natural sciences, the PSSC has pledged to collaborate with the science foundation Oscar M. Lopez Center in implementing activities related to climate change, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and climate resilience. It has also began cooperating with Greenpeace Philippines in gathering data on air pollution in Quezon City, where the Philippine Social Science Center is situated, aiding in the realization of Greenpeace’s goal of mitigating air pollution problems not just in the city but in Metro Manila as a whole.
PSSC has also been involved in the Philippine Forum for Quality Basic Education (Educ Forum), a platform for consultation, collaborative research and analysis, and high-level advice to strategic basic education policy, planning and programming. Together with other civil society organizations, education sector organizations, organizations and foundations coming from the private sector, and bilateral agencies and multilateral organizations, PSSC brings in its unique and substantive experience, expertise and perspectives to further understand and address issues in education. PSSC also serves as an ex-officio member of the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc.
