Overview

The Training Workshop on Designing Qualitative Social Science Research will provide an overview of the basic concepts and the step-by-step process of qualitative social science research beginning from identifying a research topic and formulating a research problem, up to constructing a research framework and selecting the appropriate approach and methodology. The primary resource material is the 2018 research guidebook, Doing Social Science Research, published by the PSSC to aid social scientists in doing research. By capacitating social scientists with the necessary skills to design a good qualitative social science research, PSSC, through this essential training, will be contributing to its mission of leading social science knowledge creation and sharing.

Who should attend?

This training workshop is intended for social science teachers and undergraduate and graduate students and (qualitative) social science researchers in the academe, government, civil society, and private sector.

What will participants learn?

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the fundamental concepts and different stages of the qualitative research process, especially in designing research;
  • expound on the different approaches, methods, and tools for qualitative research; 
  • and evaluate and apply the appropriate qualitative method/s for a given research topic/proposal.

Dr. Jan Robert Go

Dr. Jan Robert R. Go is an Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Department of Political Science and currently serving as its Graduate Program Coordinator. In 2022, he received his doctoral degree in political theory from the Central China Normal University in Wuhan, China. His doctoral dissertation focused on the politics of participation in urban communities in the Philippines and China during the pandemic-related lockdowns. He obtained his Master of Arts in Political Science degree from the UP Diliman in 2013 and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UP Manila in 2009.

Currently, he is the president of the Philippine Political Science Association, a regular member of the Philippine Social Science Council. He also sits on the Board of Directors of the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS), an associate member of the PSSC. Previously, he served as the managing editor of the Philippine Political Science Journal from 2014 to 2023. He was also the Associate Dean for Research, Extension, and Publications at the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy from August 2022 to August 2024.

As a faculty at the UP Department of Political Science, he handles graduate and undergraduate courses in Philippine politics, political theory, and political methodology. He also teaches an introductory course to Qualitative Research in Political Science and Research Design in Political Science in UP Diliman. His areas of research interest include local politics and decentralization, urban and rural grassroots politics, construction of power, participation theory, and Chinese politics.

How to register?

Interested participants can visit https://bit.ly/PSSC-DQSSR25. Please answer the registration form, which includes the learner’s needs assessment, and pay the registration fee on or before 30 March 2025 or until slots are filled. You may pay via our online payment center or bank transfer.

The course is open to all social science researchers, faculty, students, development workers, practitioners, and local government officers and staff interested in doing qualitative and/or quantitative social science research.

The course will be delivered on-site and synchronously. It will employ lectures, discussions, open fora, and interactive exercises.

The course will be held for a duration of two days from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The total duration is 16 hours.

Yes. The participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. Each participant must accomplish an evaluation form to receive the certificate.

PSSC Cancellation and Refund Policy

  1. The PSSC reserves the right to postpone or cancel a training program in case the minimum number of participants is not met or for other reasons beyond the control of the PSSC, such as typhoons, calamities, or other force majeure events. In such cases, payment made shall be returned to the participants in full.
  2. Participants who cancel before the seven-day period prior to the start of the course will not be charged any cancellation fee. Payments already made shall be refunded in full.
  3. Participants who cancel within the seven-day period before the start of the course shall be refunded 50% of the training fee already paid.
  4. No-show participants or those who cancel on the day itself shall not get a refund of their training fee.
  5. Substitution of participants is allowed up to one day before the start of the course.
  6. Communications and notifications regarding cancellations must be emailed to training@pssc.org.ph.
